I created a personal weather Facebook page. Shameless plug: https://www.facebook.com/SuzanneWilsonWx -- *LIKE* me!
I have never wanted to do this, but with my new gig, it makes sense and they all plug their personal pages on-air. Here I am jumping into the world of keeping up with a personal Facebook page. I was talking about it this morning with one of the other meteorologists at Time Warner Cable News and he brought up a good point about the future of broadcast meteorology and television. He said that social media is a part of the future of hiring and having a big fan base could give you a one up when up against another candidate. And, he's right. Social media, good or bad, has become a HUGE part of many jobs, especially television jobs. Everyone wants news and weather updates, right now. Unfortunately, local television meteorologists are competing with phone apps, national 24-hr weather channels, websites, etc. The reason I say 'unfortunately' is because many times, if you're not looking at a local television station forecast, your forecast is likely coming from weather enthusiasts, forecasters located in other states that forecast for you, or computers throwing out model data without a human forecaster. These outlets have become the norm but, I think, what people don't understand is that your local television stations and NWS offices are some of the only people forecasting for YOU, where YOU live! So, here's another shameless plug.. Your local television meteorologists will most likely have a better eye on the weather for you and give you the most accurate forecast as possible. Always remember, God has the final say in what will happen. The weather is hard to predict and we do our best to prepare you for the worst!
The biggest challenge I see in my new Facebook page is figuring out how to grow a fan base and keep the information on my page interesting! Any suggestions? What do you want to know? See? Read?
Thanks for listening! More to come on here and my Facebook page. Also, follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/SuzanneWeather
